Truth Will Come Out

Grade 9, Thlokomelo Drop in Centre

Amanda and Buhle were best friends. One night, Buhle asked Amanda what she was doing at the clinic because shewas standing in the line for pregnant people.

“Are you pregnant, Amanda?” “No, I am not, why are you asking me that question?” Amanda answered.

“Because I saw you, Amanda. Tell me the truth now.” “I am not pregnant, Buhle. Why were you at the clinic?” said Amanda.

“Ok, you want the truth?” “Yes Amanda. Please.” “I was sick, that’s all.”

“Ok, if you say so,” said Buhle. The next morning Amanda woke up while Buhle was asleep. When Buhle woke up, she saw that Amanda was not there. She started to get worried because it was very dark outside. Buhle started calling but Amanda did not answer. When Amanda showed up, Amanda asked, “Where have you been? I was worried sick.”

“Do not worry,” said Amanda. “I was at the park.” “Doing what?” “Sitting alone,” responded Amanda.

“You know it’s not very safe out there,” said Buhle. “I know that and please stop making me a baby. I am old now.”

Amanda, what is going on with you? You are so moody these days!” said Buhle.

“Nothing, I am just sick, that’s all,” said Amanda. “Amanda, you are pregnant,” said Buhle.

“I am so sorry. I did not mean it to happen. It was just one night,” Amanda said.

“One night. Are you mad?” asked Buhle. “I said I am sorry, Buhle.” “Who is the father, ‘Manda, tell me now. I need an answer.” “I don’t know,” responded Amanda.

“What!” exclaimed Buhle. “How could you be such an irresponsible woman?” “I said I am sorry,” repeated Amanda.

“I am asking you one last time, who is the father of this child?” shouted Buhle.

“My father’s brother,” mumbled Amanda. “You are joking!” exclaimed Buhle. “No I am not,” stated Amanda.

“When did this happen?” asked Buhle. “The day you went to town, he said that I should come and clean his room. Then he forced me,” explained Amanda.
