Lindiwe’s Life

Grade 8, Ikageng

There is a girl who lives in a rural village named Kwa-Mhlanga Village. Her name is Lindiwe Mncube. Lindiwe is a very kind, sweet, and beautiful girl in her village. Lindiwe and Sandile, who is her boyfriend, went to a party. She did this even after her mother gave her advice not to go there and she was only 16 years old.

Lindiwe decided to go with her friends who really enjoyed drinking, smoking and dancing. There was a gang called ‘The dangerous killer boys with energy.’ One of the boys in the gang named Sandile told Lindiwe that he loves her and Lindiwe was very happy. They then started dating for two months. Sandile said to her, ‘Babe, let’s have sex for you to show me how much you love me.’

Lindiwe agreed because she felt like Sandile would leave her if she refused and afterwards he would give her money. And she had to buy bread for herself. When she came back from the party, her step-mother, asked her, ‘ Lindiwe, didn’t I tell you not to go to that party of yours?’ Lindiwe answered, ‘Mom you did, but all my friends were there.’

Her mother, Nontobeko Mncube, told her to go back there and never come back! Lindiwe was crying and she tried to explain but her mother told her to get out. So Lindiwe went to Sandile’s house, and told him everything. He agreed but told her that she can only stay for one night because his mother would be coming back the next day.

She woke up the next day vomiting, and she thought it was because of the alcohol that they were drinking at the party. After about four weeks, she noticed some changes in her body and also in her stomach. She went to see the doctor to test what was wrong. After the test the doctor told her, ‘ Lindiwe, you are pregnant.’ Lindiwe did not know what to say, and she cried.

Her mother saw her crying and Lindiwe told her that she is sorry, and asked for forgiveness. Her mother punished her and made her live in the room with no furniture. She did not tell her mother because she knew that she was going to be kicked out. She took her clothes and went to the room outside to keep her clothes there.

She ended up not going to school for about a month because of the pregnancy, and she was ashamed of herself. She went to tell Sandile about her pregnancy and he did not seem to care, responding to Lindiwe, ‘I did not sleep with you, so don’t make things hard for both of us.’ Lindiwe was so angry and started crying. Sandile still did not want to believe or accept that Lindiwe is pregnant with his baby.

After some months…….

It was already time to give birth and she was home alone. She screamed but no one heard her. Sandile went to check up on her and he found Lindiwe on the floor screaming. He quickly ran to pick her up and rushed her to the hospital and they took hours and hours. Sandile even thought negative stuff and still did not want to believe Lindiwe.

The doctor called out, ‘Sandile Mbuthuma’ and he quickly stood up. The doctor seemed to look disappointed. ‘Sandile, my child’, he said, ‘ I have great news for you. It’s a boy!’ Sandile was both happy and disappointed and angry in a funny way. He replied to the doctor, ‘Doctor, I don’t know how to say this, but the child is not mine.’ The doctor said, ‘But Lindiwe told me that you are the father, but it’s okay, I understand.’

Sandile went to check up on Lindiwe in the ward. He greeted her and asked her how she was. Lindiwe said that she was okay and looked down. Sandile said, walking close to her, ‘ Lindiwe, can I see the baby?’ Lindiwe did not know what to say, but she gave the baby to Sandile who asked, ‘Does your
mother know that you are here?’ She answered, ‘No.’

Afterwards, the baby cried, and Sandile tried to make the baby sleep but he could not. Then Lindiwe took the child and gave him milk. Sandile asked Lindiwe what the baby’s name was. Lindiwe answered, ‘I was thinking of Noluthando, but I’m not sure. Can you tell me?’ ‘Noluthando is fine – it’s actually a nice name,’ said Sandile. ‘Ok, so you mean Noluthando is a name for a boy?’ he said. They both laughed and then Sandile thought of Sanele. Lindiwe agreed to give her baby the name, Sanele.

The next day she was discharged and she did not have a choice than to go home to her mother. Sandile went to fetch Lindiwe and Sanele from the hospital in a car, and then dropped her at the gate. ‘I hope everything goes well with your mother,’ he said. Lindiwe said to the baby boy, ‘Say bye bye to uncle Sandile.’ Sandile then left.

She went home and found her mother sleeping on the couch, and woke her up. Her mother asked her, ‘Who’s child is this, Lindiwe?’ Lindiwe answered, ‘It’s mine, mum.’ Her mother could not believe what she heard. She started shouting at Lindiwe who then explained everything to her mother. But her mother was angry and told her never to step in the house again! Lindiwe then went to Sandile’s house and they all lived there.

Then finally they went to school together until they finished their studies. Sandile became a lawyer and Lindiwe became a doctor. They lived happily and even bought a house in town. The child was 4 years old and all was perfect for them and they got married.
