Grade 8, Malvern High School
In the streets of Alberton, a peaceful city, lived Mirriam and Don. They were both in their 70s and in love. They were the best of neighbours and they treated each other as siblings. They never let each other down.
It was the time of COVID-19 and the streets of Alberton were extremely quiet because of the lockdown. Mirriam woke up every day in the morning to check up on Don since they were the best of neighbours. Don did the same. Don woke up to check on Mirriam but something about that day was different. Don did not meet Mirriam on the way like he usually did.
Don rushed to Mirriam’s house only to find out that she was gone. He called to check on her. Mirriam’s daughter answered the phone and told Don that Mirriam was really sick and they did not think that she would survive. Don’s heart was broken and he did not know what to do. He went to his house and cried his eyes out. Don did not want to give up. He wanted to see Mirriam but he was afraid that he might get sick because of COVID-19.
Don didn’t care about his life anymore; he just wanted to go see Mirriam- that was his goal. He went to Mirriam’s house to check for any clues of where she might be. He found an address for Helen Joseph Hospital. He took a taxi to the nearest rank, then he took another. He then arrived at Helen Joseph hospital and he asked the receptionist if she knew someone called Mirriam who was admitted to their hospital. He was told what room she was in, then he ran there as fast as he could.
He found Mirriam, then he put his hands on hers. She opened her eyes and said, “Don, I was waiting for you.” They both smiled at each other, then Mirriam said, “I love you.” And just like that- she was gone.
