The So-Called Stepfather

Grade 6, Yeoville Community School

There was a girl called Monalisa who lived in the city with both her parents. When Monalisa turned three years old her father died in a car accident. Two months later, Monalisa’s father was buried so Monalisa’s mother decided to get married again. Monalisa was excited because she thought her new dad would be kind and friendly to her. Monalisa’s stepfather arrived home with Monalisa’s mother. Monalisa welcomed them home.

Ten years later, Monalisa’s mother got a job at the hospital as a nurse. One day, Monalisa broke a plate accidentally when she was washing the dishes. Her stepfather started calling her names and it hurt her. Monalisa thought of telling her mother when she came back from work.

A few hours later, her mother arrived home, but she didn’t have the courage to tell her mother what had happened. A day passed by, Monalisa went outside to play with her friends. When she came back home her stepfather was waiting for her, holding a belt. He asked her where she was coming from. She replied, “I was outside, playing with my  friends.” “What did I tell you about going outside?” Monalisa was scared and started shivering. She apologised to her stepfather. He did not forgive her. Her stepfather hit Monalisa’s hands with the belt. Monalisa was scared to tell her mother.

Monalisa’s stepfather would drink beer and smoke cigarettes and make a mess. He would then call Monalisa to clean up the mess. She would shed tears, thinking about when her late father was alive.

One Friday, her mother came home early. She saw her daughter being abused by the person whom she called,  “husband.” She was angry and started fighting with her husband. To save her daughter, Monalisa’s mother filed for a divorce.

Six years later, Monalisa and her mother would do fun activities. Monalisa’s mother never thought of getting married ever again.
